Boston becoming a top U.S tourist destination
It’s not hard to see why Boston is so popular with tourists, with a rich culture being prevalent throughout the city and attracting tourists from all walks of life; alongside which there are a number of different activities and attractions on offer.
Perhaps as a result of its intellectual reputation, Boston is considered a highly cultured city with more than 100 colleges and universities located in the Greater Boston area. Despite this, sports are a huge part of Bostonian culture; the Boston Red Sox are arguably the most famous baseball team in history and fans throughout the Boston area are known for their fanatical devotion to the team. Fenway Park, the home of the Red Sox, has achieved legendary status among sports fans across the country as the oldest ballpark in the Major League and becoming a tourist attraction in its own right.
Music has also played a huge part in the history of Boston. From arena rock acts such as the eponymous ‘Boston’ and ‘Aerosmith’ to world renowned and respected classical outfits such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Boston truly has something for every music aficionado. Since the 80s Boston has also been home to a burgeoning underground music scene, with many ska, hardcore and indie bands gaining notoriety in the area before achieving national acclaim, including acts such as the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Dinosaur Jr and the Pixies. Local bands remain an integral part of Boston’s culture and visitors to the area can enjoy a night of local music on almost any night of the week at a number of different venues.
Unsurprisingly, Boston’s culture is largely influenced by Irish Americans, as the city has been a major destination for Irish immigrants since the 19th century, when the first wave of Irish nationals arrived at the city’s port. Irish colonists first celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in Boston in March 1737, the first civic and public celebration of St. Patrick in U.S history. Presently, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated throughout Boston by most of the population, regardless of whether they are of Irish descent or not. Celebrations in Boston tend to be large affairs, with street parades and parties taking place throughout the city every year. Many tourists visit Boston at this time of year to join in the celebrations, making the city’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities some of the largest in the world. Indeed, many hotels in Boston find themselves unable to cater to the demand of party hungry visitors every March.
Boston’s rich culture will see tourists coming back again and again, offering a fascinating glimpse into some of the key events that occurred during the American Revolution coupled with friendly locals and culture at every turn.
