So which would you prefer – a desktop or a laptop? The chances are that you have one or other type of computer already. However, if you are thinking of changing, you should consider the pros and cons carefully before you make your final decision. It’s not as easy as simply picking the one which has all the features you need and sells for the best price.

Firstly, you need to think about how mobile you are. If you only use your computer occasionally, perhaps to play games or go online, then a desktop will probably suit you far better than a laptop. And since they are very often obtainable much more cheaply, you will save money too.

But if you are currently using a desktop and you are thinking of upgrading, think about how happy you are with your existing situation. Is your desktop sitting on a tiny computer desk under the stairs? Do you feel isolated from the rest of the house when you are online?

This is the main drawback to having a desktop machine – it limits you to being in one place. And you also need to allocate a dedicated space for it to sit. That will work fine if you have a home office or a portion of a room that you can set aside for this purpose. But if you find it is getting in the way, you might want to seriously think about a laptop instead.

Let’s face it, laptops can be zipped up into their bags and put away behind the sofa or in the cupboard when not in use. And that can be a real advantage in a home where space is an issue. The main benefit of a laptop is mobility. If you want to sit on the sofa and watch television while you are typing up that report, or even surfing the internet, you can do – a desktop doesn’t offer the same versatility.

Once you have a decent laptop bag to go with your machine, you can also take it away on holiday with you, or on business trips or similar outings. Even if you don’t go online with it, if the laptop is powerful enough you can use it as a DVD player to watch films on.

If you decide to go for a laptop, make sure you get wireless broadband to give you ultimate mobility. A wireless router will mean that you can move around your home and still get internet access regardless of where you are.

So you see, there are plenty of things to consider before you make that all important purchase; but ensure to choose the one which offers the right solution for you.

Long before scanners become the fashion, people routinely copied important pieces of information and then filed them away for future use. Scanners brought a mini-revolution to the office environment; people were now able to scan important papers (i.e. ID cards, health insurance cards, etc.) and download it to a permanent, digitally retrievable file. The business card scanner takes the scanner to the next level – the ability to scan business cards using a lightweight, portable scanning device.

Imagine the practicality
How many times have you collected business cards during a business lunch or at a business meeting, only to misplace the business cards as soon as your return to the office or hotel room? What could have turned out to be an excellent contact just vanished into thin air! Not so with a portable business card scanner. Simply remove your business cards from your coat, pants pocket or wallet and swipe them through the scanner – even before you leave the restaurant or the meeting room. Since the portable scanner requires no separate power source, all you need to do is connect it to your laptop with a regular USB cable. Within seconds, your business card info is uploaded to one of your computer’s many applications. You then have a digital archived record forever. Now you can leave your business lunch or meeting with more confidence – no longer will you have to wildly search for hours for your missing business cards.

But how does it work?
The business card scanner operates like other scanning machines, except it’s specifically designed for business card usage. When you swipe a business card, it reads the information on the card by utilizing optical character recognition (OCR) technology. It then downloads the data into on of the computer’s applications for easy retrieval. What’s even more amazing is that this miracle device can even capture the card’s image, and then downloads it to one of the computer’s applications. When you open the file, you’ll see the exact digital replicate of the business card, including any graphics or logos. That often makes it easier to remember a new client’s business, especially if it’s an unusual graphic or logo. The business card scanner has just acted like your own personal assistant, minus the huge price.

The business card scanner scans and reads business cards accurately and quickly each and every time. It’s portable size is extremely convenient for all airport personnel.

Business processes are becoming more digital by the day. We now send emails, rather than memos. We use online quote systems, rather than sending a fax. We search for answers on Google, rather than looking it up in a book. Almost everything we do in our personal and professional lives involves some kind of digital or multimedia interaction.

As you look to the future, and increasingly use digital platforms to communicate and do business, will you be able to do away with offline processes such as printing? Constantly keeping your digital systems at the forefront of technology may improve your online productivity, but without an efficient printing system to support your offline needs, your business could suffer.

As day-to-day employees’ working practices travel further up the digital stream – some now operating only in a digital space with emails, web and network connections – it’s important to keep up with the times. Even by having the most state-of-the-art email, hardware, database and networking systems, there is currently still a need to have hard-copies of information as a back-up, for legal reasons or simply for ease of use. Therefore, whilst the digital revolution is increasing business efficiency and information accessibility, the need for printing is currently still strong. Paper is something that is engrained in our society and the concept of an entirely paperless office still looks to be well off in the future.

One of the biggest challenges faced by companies is how to effectively manage and integrate their offline printing solutions. A simple, secure network of printers may no longer suffice. To make your business’ printing the most efficient it can be, an in-depth look at the current printing needs and situation is needed: the more complex and fragmented the printing network is, the greater the likelihood it is not as effective as it should be.

Integrating your business printing solution with your online systems is very important, as it will allow users to access, create, process and distribute content and information easily.

The environmental impact of printing should also be considered, and an integrated printing solution that allows fast, high-quality duplex printing is a must in today’s business society. Not only will this help reduce the company’s environmental impact, it will help save money too.

Therefore, an assessment of your current business needs, whilst considering your existing online systems, would be highly beneficial to any business. With the right printing solution and your existing, efficient online systems, your business will be able to achieve maximum online and offline productivity.
