Washing machines are one of those household essentials that you probably don’t think about very much until you need to buy a new one. Of course, they are essential appliances for the home that not only clean your laundry, but protect and care for delicate fabrics too; making sure your most precious items can be cleaned without getting damaged.

One specific choice to decide upon when buying your new machine is whether you want a freestanding or integrated model. If you don’t want to hide your washing machine away then a freestanding model may be for you. As it goes, such types of washing machines simply slot beneath your standard kitchen worktops, meaning you can see the front; and with a wide array of different colours and textures to choose from, you can really make sure yours stands out from the crowd. Alternatively, you may also vouch for an option that complements your existing kitchens colour and design.

However, if you would rather blend your washing machine into the rest of your kitchen then an integrated washing machine may be more appropriate. Integrated, or built in washing machines, are simply fitted into your existing kitchen units with a cupboard door closing over the front of the machine itself, meaning the washer stays concealed when the cupboard door is closed. And if you prefer to keep machines and appliances out of sight, this may be the perfect way for you to do so.

What’s more, it is also important that you make the right choices when it comes to the more technical side of things. Spin speed is one feature you may want to look out for, as the faster the spin speed, the dryer your clothes will be when the cycle is finished. As a result, you spend less energy, money and time drying your clothes after they’ve been washed.

Spin speeds tend to range from between 1000rpm to 1600rpm, whilst some of the more recent models tend to offer a variable speed feature, which allows you to chop and choose as you need. Thicker materials may need to spin that little bit faster to get rid of excess water whereas more delicate fabrics are better suited to slower speeds, as this is less likely to cause damage.

The wash capacity is another deciding factor with options ranging from 3kg to a more accommodating 10kg. In fact, the larger the capacity then the more laundry you can wash at one time; therefore, households occupied with a single person or a couple may opt for a smaller capacity, whereas family households may feel a larger capacity machine is more suitable.

In addition, a larger drum washing machine also helps to reduce creasing in your laundry, as there is more room for items to move around. Indeed, this can prove a great option if you would rather avoid the ironing!

A final consideration is the energy efficient rating of your machine. Rating ‘A’ is the most efficient, whilst ‘G’ is the least; therefore, if environmental friendliness is important to you then look out for this. Of course, there are many factors to consider when purchasing a new washing machine, but it is possible for washing machine shopping to be made easy. And with a varied range of washing machines available, the most difficult decision may be choosing the one that best suits your needs.

Solar paneled street lighting; the umbrella for dogs; the one legged bar stool. There are some inventions that have failed find a spot in the ritual of day-to-day life. Other inventions, however, have not just become part of our lives; they have transformed the way we live in a way that leaves us unable to think of how we managed before.

The television is one of the greatest inventions of our time and has revolutionised the way we receive information and experience the world. The development of the TV goes back as far as 1884 when a 20-year old German student Paul Gotlier Nipkow patented the first electro-mechanical television system. The invention used the process of converting a visual image into a stream of electrical pulses; however moving images were not possible from Nipko’s work.

It is Scottish inventor John Logie Baird who is widely credited with inventing what we know as the television. He first demonstrated the transmission of moving images in London in 1925. Baird Television Limited made Britain’s first television broadcast on September 30, 1929. The system used a scanned image of30 lines; just enough for a close up of one person. Baird’s broadcasts continued until June 1932 but his legacy is forever felt and enjoyed in homes around the world.

The television opened up a world that was previously unseen to all people around the world. But, however much the TV has transformed modern life it is a device that only allows for one way communication, and does not allow for a dialogue or an exchange of information. It was a Boston Professor called Alexander Graham Bell who, as early as 1874, began work on an invention that was to open up the world of communication in a way previously only dreamed of.

Professor Bell’s obsession with sound and communication began from a young age. His mother was profoundly deaf and his father and grandfather were all noted for their work on elocution and speech. Bell’s work led him to win the race to be the first person to patent the telephone in 1876; the first system which converted sounds to electrical impulses and then back to a tone that sounds like the original voice. Bell’s successful experiment with his assistant, Watson, on March 10th 1876 has become a thing of legend, when the first complete sentence was transmitted: ‘Watson, come here; I want you.’ Bell refused to ever have a telephone in his own office stating that it was an intrusion on his real work.

Around 50 years before Bell patented his invention, work had already begun on another device which was to change the landscape of modern life; recording memories and capturing moments in time that would other wise be long forgotten. The first permanent photograph was made in 1826 by Joseph Niepce in Paris with what was the first early camera on record. The camera has since continued to progress and develop throughout time, with a revolution taking place over 100 years later than Niepce’s work in Paris.

In 1975, Steven J Sasson, an electrical engineer began work on inventing the digital camera. The assignment was given to him by his supervisor at the Kodak Company and tasked him with capturing digital images that could be translated on screen within seconds. In December that same year Sasson captured a black and white image that took 23 seconds to record onto a digital cassette and another 23 seconds to show the image of a television. Since then the digital camera has revolutionized the way we use and interact with images, with people becoming their own photo expert; from printing their images to displaying them in digital photo frames – all in the comfort of their own homes.

Great inventions are diverse, complex and amazing but they all have one thing in common: they have changed our world.
In a gadget-inspired world, who would have thought that a mobile phone is the one gizmo we can’t live without? In a recent poll, more than a quarter of people surveyed voted the mobile phone to be the household item that has most changed their lives. And for the young, it’s even more important.

Of those aged 16-24 who responded to the survey, 42 per cent named the mobile phone as their favourite life-changing gadget. The mobile also topped the poll ahead of the laptop, and the MP3 player with digital cameras and satellite navigation systems also proving popular.

But mobile phones have become a crucial part of modern life, and it appears it is not just for keeping in touch with friends and family, but also acting as an address book, calendar and diary. For some people, their mobile phone even synchronises all of this information with the computers back at home or in the office.

Today, there are more than 3.3billion mobiles in the world and Britain has one of the highest rates of ownership. This year saw dozens queuing outside shops when Apple’s latest iPhone was released. This latest device has high-speed internet access as well as more standard features such as a camera

Satnavs were also described as invaluable by those polled. One person surveyed said that their Tom Tom satnav device had on one occasion navigated an alternative cross-country route to the airport when the motorway was at a standstill, and so saved the expense of having to buy new plane tickets, paying for itself in one fell swoop.

Even hair straighteners, which are relied upon by hundreds and thousands of women to remove their kinks and curls, came in at 11th position in the survey.

However, the poll also found that not all gadgets improve our lives. The foot spa, for example, was named the most useless gadget, with the bread maker coming close behind along with the ice cream makers, orange peelers and electronic carving knives.

However for the domestic goddesses of our time, the forever reliable washing machine, vacuum cleaner and microwave all ranked in the top ten. Even the salad spinner earned its place in the rankings.

But not everyone is convinced of the importance of gadgets. Half of those polled who were over 65 said they could not identify a particular item that they felt had made a real difference to their lives.
