Experience Edinburgh in all its Winter Glory
Edinburgh is globally renowned for its annual range of spectacular festivals and events. Indeed, the Edinburgh International Festival is highly regarded as one of the best of its kind, whilst hundreds of thousands of people participate in the Hogmanay celebrations every year. With Christmas fast approaching, it seems the city is once again pulling out all the stops.
Launching the festivities, Light Night is held at the end of November and marks the switching on of the Scottish capital’s Christmas lights. Complete with fireworks, the evening also heralds the start of the many winter activities on offer, such as the markets and street entertainment.
The city’s East Princes Street Gardens also undergo a fantastical makeover. The Winter Wonderland is a great destination to head for and houses one of Britain’s largest outdoor ice skating rinks. In fact, there can be nothing more breathtaking than whizzing around the ice against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.
Alternatively you can try out the snow slide or have a go in the snowball bumper cars. All that fresh air, however, may leave you feeling more than a little worn out. Therefore, why not wander over to the traditional Belgian Spiegeltent for some refreshments? If you’re lucky you may even be able to catch one of the evening cabaret performances or shows.
The city’s winter season also sees the beginning of the Christmas markets. Both the German Market and the Highland Village Christmas Market are great for finding interesting gifts for Christmas. With an array of German and locally produced handicrafts, jewellery and foodstuffs, there is something for everyone.
There’s no need to worry about the cold – with the selection of winter warmers to hand, it will be easy to stay snug. So, from German gluhwein (mulled wine) to Scottish hot toddies make sure you banish the chill in true festive style!
To get into the spirit of giving, you could always take part in the Edinburgh Christmas Santa Stroll in December. Designed to raise money for charity, the event starts off in West Princes Street Gardens and is a perfect way to view the city in all its glory at winter. From the gardens, participants then head through streets towards the famous Grassmarket. The day will close with a spectacular finale, while those who dress in Santa suits will be rewarded!
Edinburgh’s festive season draws to a close with its impressive four-day Hogmanay celebrations. With its packed annual events list, the city is famous for bringing in the New Year in style; most notable is the fireworks display, which is staged at the castle.
So, for a festive break filled with a sense of charm and Christmas spirit, it is definitely worth getting yourself along to the capital. With the wide range of flights to Edinburgh available, as well as the promise of a very warm Scottish welcome, there’s no excuse not to!
