No matter what type of home business you have, it’s important to make sure you find ways of running it that ensures you are as productive as you can be. It’s very easy to waste time without even realising it – and that isn’t good for you or your business.
That’s why it’s worth spending some time evaluating how you do business, to see whether you could make any changes. For example, it’s very likely that you use a computer in your work. And if you contact clients via email, it is important that you check your emails regularly to ensure that you don’t miss anything important. Therefore, allocate set times to check them each day, which will enable you to get on with other work uninterrupted.
The same could be done with your mail each day. When it arrives, make sure you deal with it all straightaway. For example, any junk mail can immediately be got rid of or shredded if it contains any personal information. Important items can either be dealt with immediately or put in a pending file for dealing with later.
It can also help to streamline your outgoing correspondence as well. Having set times to do this means that you aren’t constantly going from one job to another, and you aren’t wasting time between them either.
Take your outgoing mail, for example. If you try and do this early in the day the chances are good that you will have to do it again in the afternoon. It would be much better to allocate half an hour – or however much time is needed – to do everything in one hit.
It will also mean that you only need one trip to the post office to get everything sent out. There is nothing worse than making a trip early in the day and then having to go out again because something urgent has come in!
There are also ways to make that process more effective. Firstly you can get everything together in one place so that when you come to process your mail, you don’t have to waste time looking for anything.
Secondly, have a think about whether you could bypass the queue in the post office as well. If you regularly mail out things to people then franking machines will save you even more time. You can either pop letters directly into the post box or leave parcels at the collection point inside the post office.
As you can see, there are plenty of things you can do to speed up specific processes during your working day. And once you’ve overhauled your business like this, you’ll be able to relax and achieve more in less time.
