Nottingham: More than Folklore!
If you are playing a word association game then you will almost instantly link Nottingham to the famed tale of Robin Hood. But, this is merely a whimsical detour from a city with much to offer the visitor looking for something more. Nottingham has built up quite an array of fascinating tourist attractions, suiting everyone from the history lover, to the Robin Hood fan and in recent times, much effort has gone into ensuring the city has more to offer beyond half-day excursions for camera wielding tourists.
In fact, theatre, fine dining, shopping, sport and diverse nightlife are rich and plentiful in the modern city of Nottingham; and it has a growing reputation as a good place to visit for an entertaining getaway. Nottingham rests upon the rivers Trent and Leen, and the city has approximately three hundred thousand residents.
Victoria Centre and Broadmarsh Shopping Centre are the two main sites for commercial entertainment, housing top level retailers and designer outlets, as well as cafes and fine restaurants.
Furthermore, the city is home to several exciting music venues including the Royal Concert Hall and the Nottingham Arena. Sport is particularly important to the people of Nottingham, with three major venues within a short distance of each other. The local football teams are Nottingham Forest and Notts County, with the latter being the oldest Football League team in the world. The distinction is important, so best do your homework before engaging the locals in any chat on this subject! And, if you are interested in athletics then you may well be intrigued with the annual “Robin Hood Marathon”, which grows with each passing year. In addition, a handful of shorter races can also be found throughout the year.
As it goes, with a varied range of activities to do in the city, as well as the city’s blossoming reputation means that Nottingham hotels are in popular demand, which is perhaps not surprising considering positive word of mouth brings with it an influx of visitors. Furthermore, the city is accessible and well serviced by public transport, whilst the public have proven willing to let their curiosity get the better of them.
With the city surrounded by beautiful countryside and traditional market towns, there is much to see and enjoy in the city of Nottingham. Indeed, many have sampled it and you can be sure that many more will follow.
