The Sights and Delights of London
London is a fast-paced, cosmopolitan city with enough fantastic sights to see that you would probably have to, or indeed want to spend a whole year sightseeing. Most of the highlights, however, are easy to reach and can provide everything from activity to relaxation on your visit to London.
If you feel the need for speed, why not jump on a high-speed cruise to check out London from the Thames River. Leaving from the Waterloo Millenium Pier, it is a quick and fun way to check out all the main London sights such as Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and St Pauls Cathedral’s dome.
Westminster Cathedral is the place to visit if you wish to learn more about the history surrounding Britain. Almost all of the British monarchs are buried here and you can even see the chair used at the coronation ceremonies. One of the highlights of the Cathedral is visiting Poet’s Corner, where all the famous British poets and writers have been buried and commemorated, including Shakespeare. In fact, you may even be lucky enough to catch the world famous choristers in song at the daily services.
It’s a good idea to get in early at one of the iconic London sights, Buckingham Palace, for the 11:30am changing of the Guards – a grand spectacle of pomp and ceremony at the home of the Royal Family. And, rolling away from Buckingham Palace is the grassy expanse of St James Park, where strolling through these Royal parklands is a magnificent way to spend an afternoon in the British sun, whilst the views can be described as quite spectacular.
Furthermore, if you have an interest in exploring the bright lights of the city then Piccadilly Circus is the place to be; as it goes many visitors have described it as London’s version of Times Square. Indeed, it is packed with a variety of shops and restaurants and not to mention also being on the door step of the West End Theatre District. Therefore, this makes it the perfect place to grab a bite to eat before one of the big shows.
Another great sight to see near Piccadilly Circus is just through the archway of the Royal Academy. There you will find the first ever iconic red telephone box, which is in fact now a historically listed building!
As you can see, there are a multitude of things to do in London. Luckily there are more than enough London hotels to accommodate you whilst you explore the city. And, if you don’t manage to achieve everything that is on your itinerary during your visit, you can be sure you will be back again soon enough to further explore the fascinating attractions that this popular city has to offer.
