The Wonders of Books
There’s a lot more to books than meets the eye and the capabilities of these bound and printed companions should never be taken for granted. Indeed, for some people books are associated with school days long gone by and reading is an activity that perhaps gets overlooked or forgotten.
Recent research statistics from the UK only reiterate this view as they reveal one in four adults say they haven’t read a book in the last year. Although some Britons admit to being strangers to one of humankind’s oldest commodities, book sales in the UK are at an all time high and still continue to rise with an estimated 338 million books sold annually at a cost of around ?2,478m. In comparison to the previous year this indicated an increase of 13% in both volume and value, so the figures are there to prove that books are as popular as ever.
If you dig a little deeper you find out that males aged between sixteen and twenty-four are least likely to read books. Therefore, the popularity and usage of books seems dependent on the social grouping you look at.
Books undoubtedly play a large part in overall education and there’s no reason to stop just because schools out for good. Reading is an activity with multitasking capabilities and can inform, entertain and relax all at the same time. Engaging in a relaxing activity such as reading before going to bed can help you to get a good night’s sleep, whilst bus and train journeys are much more pleasant if you have a paperback accomplice to keep you company.
If fiction isn’t your thing then don’t give up on the idea of reading altogether as there are plenty of non-fiction categories to keep you happy. If you have a hobby or interest, such as photography or art, related books are a great way to further your knowledge and delve deeper into the subject.
If there’s a subject you need to know more about but don’t want to go to training classes then why not pick up a book and become informed. Learn more about the world you live in by reading around topics like architecture, culture and arts, film and history whilst biographies and memoirs allow you to catch a glimpse into the lives of others. You can even learn more about yourself through areas such as psychology, health & fitness and of course books on how to trace your family tree.
And if taking a trip to your local bookstore seems like a lot of effort, explore an online bookstore to get a feel for what might tickle your fancy and make the most of one of the best repositories of knowledge to be found.
