For most people a holiday is an excuse to relax and unwind, to forget the daily grind of work and to re-charge the batteries. Destinations the world over have relied on their country’s laid-back attitudes and ideal geographies to attract millions of holiday-makers year-on-year to spend their hard-earned cash on doing very little.
For other travellers though, a holiday is an opportunity to do the exact opposite. It can be difficult to pursue an active hobby for the majority of the year, with daily work responsibilities or geographical restrictions usually being a problem when it comes to keeping a regular involvement in a particular interest. Going away for a week or two can be an ideal way to put work to the back of the mind and a sports holiday is a popular way for many British workers to do just that.
Many British people now travel abroad in search of an activity holiday. Destinations such as New Zealand and South Africa are hugely popular with those who can afford the exotic, due to opportunities to partake in rafting, diving and surfing, as well as walking and sailing. Closer to home, France, Spain and even Ireland can offer similar sports and activities for those wanting more than just a general relaxing break.
There are possibilities though, to achieve the best of both worlds – relaxation and activity – in destinations around the world. One sport that matches a sense of competition with a calm pace, and quenches the desire to take a regular hobby away from home, is golf.
The Canary Islands have numerous golfing destinations for the keen sporting traveller. From Tenerife to Lanzarote, Fuerteventura to Gran Canaria, there are courses perfectly situated to boast stunning views, but also challenging holes. Ten million tourists visit the islands every year, with many taking advantage of the amazing scenery and excellent facilities and conditions, including 3,200 hours of sunshine per year.
Tenerife in particular is known for its many courses, with the sport being essential to the development of the island. An act was even passed by the Canarian Parliament, which stated that no more hotels should be built unless they are classified as 5 star-quality and comprise different services, namely golf courses. The south part of the island is particularly popular, around the resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas, where there are both nine-hole and eighteen-hole courses.
Although it may be enough for many people to be presented with a sun-bed, a beach and a cocktail, it is a different story for many others. Golf holidays can offer a perfect solution to the problem of having to choose between relaxing and satisfying the desire to take a hobby away.
Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned amateur, there are possibilities around the world for those wishing to hone their swing. The Canaries are an ideal example of a perfect setting in which to do so.
