Add a little activity to your weekend break

For many people a weekend break away from the normal routine involves exploring a previously unexplored destination and discovering the sights and attractions on offer. For some, these sights might be cultural or historical in nature, such as paying a visit to a castle or museum. For others, these sights might be altogether more materialistic and involve shopping trips to the best-known shopping areas around.

However, there can be so much more to a week-end break and recent times has seen an upsurge in the popularity of dedicated themed weekend packages which can offer a welcome change to the more mundane weekend activities many people tend to engage in.

If you are a golfer, for example, why not consider taking a golf weekend? Rather than trudge around the shops, you could be trudging some of the UK’s finest fairways instead. The UK has many excellent golf courses and regardless of your ability you can indulge yourself both on and off the greens. Most golf breaks include the price of accommodation — often in a well regarded hotel — as well as meals and a set number of rounds of golf. What’s more, as a guest of the hotel you’ll also be able to take advantage of the hotel facilities, such as a gym or spa, meaning that you could, in essence, have both a golf break and a spa break in one!

If you prefer watching rather than playing, you might consider a weekend break centred on a sporting event; perhaps taking in a horse racing meeting at Royal Windsor, Ascot, Sandown Park or any of the numerous racecourses around the UK and Ireland. These types of breaks often involve hotel accommodation; transfer to and from the racecourse, admission to the member’s enclosure and a sumptuous meal in the members’ restaurant. The only things not provided are the race winners!

Sporting events weekends are not only available on horse racing, but are also available for football matches, golf tournaments, motorsports, cricket and just about every other sport imaginable, so if you want to cheer on your favourite team, feel the tension on the 18th green or soak up the atmosphere of high-octane racing, you’re sure to find a break to suit.

Perhaps your idea of a weekend break is even more sedate and an ideal break for you would be to watch the treading of the boards in a West End theatre production. Well, you’re in luck, as you can also take up a weekend break that involves just that! From hotel accommodation and admission to the show, right through to meals and transfers, weekend theatre breaks are a popular choice; with London’s West End playing host to such shows as Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and Carmen, in addition to a host of other theatre performances, concerts and shows there’s sure to be a show for you!

Even visits to some of the finest national exhibitions can be incorporated into many activity weekend breaks, so whether you’re a budding gourmet chef at heart, a green fingered gardener or a choc-a-holic, you’re well catered for, with weekend breaks available for a host of exhibitions around the country. Take a walk with the Timelords and rub shoulders with Daleks and Cybermen at the Doctor Who exhibition in Cardiff, for example; or if you’ve an eye for a bargain, you could go antique hunting at a host of venues across the UK. Alternatively, indulge yourself in chocolate heaven with the Thorntons Chocolate Lovers experience and learn the secrets of the master chocolatiers.

Whatever your interests may be, there’s no need to for weekend breaks to be stuck in a rut any longer, and with activity weekend breaks covering a vast array of pursuits, themes and occasions, there’s never been a better time to fill your weekends with a little adventure.
