Canada is a huge country but despite its vast size, it boasts a population of only 32million – less than half of the UK total, and less than a tenth of their closest continental neighbour, the USA. The majority of Canadians live within the eastern conurbations of Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, the west-central cities of Calgary and Edmonton, and the west coast city of Vancouver. Although, many more are spread out throughout some of the most stunning wilderness in the world, including the glorious Rocky Mountains.

Hot in summer and frigid in winter – Canada’s weather is certainly influenced by the continental effect of the USA. Indeed, at the start of 2009 Canada was gripped by of one of the worst winters ever with excessive snowfall and frigid temperatures as staggeringly low as -50°Celsius in the provinces of Alberta and Manitoba.

So, if you have relatives or friends who live in such extreme temperatures you may want to give them a call and find out how they are dealing with the cold and snow. There are alternatives for getting in touch; you could use the relatively expensive method of dialling from a UK landline, the cheaper method of using pre-paid calling cards, and also the increasingly popular method of converting your PC or laptop to an international phone.

Regardless of whether it’s a town in eastern Nova Scotia, the metropolitan area of Toronto, Ontario or the west coast conurbation of Vancouver; contact with Canada can be achieved at a low cost if done using a computer messenger system. In fact, from downloading the same software onto your computers, two people are able to talk over the web. Of course, this is very useful if both of users are sat in front of their computers at the same time, but what if you want to call someone in Canada on their landline or mobile phone?

In recent times it has become possible to use a VoIP system to call landlines and mobile phones directly from your computer. Indeed, you can phone Canada at the click of a button on your PC or laptop. And if you use the right VoIP system then it is possible to place cheap calls to Canada; in addition to having the ability to take advantage of unlimited calls to landlines and mobiles in the country.

So, whether you want to speak to friends or family of if you need the latest snow report from a Banff/Lake Louise or Whistler resort before you pack for your holiday, internet VoIP services may prove a useful option to have.
