Whether for hard-nosed business or purely pleasurable purposes there are many people in the UK who wish to get in touch with others across Europe; to talk to a loved one or merely to discuss the latest gossip with a friend who has temporarily or permanently moved abroad.

Most people are now aware that instant messenger systems exist allowing friends and family all the over the world to keep in touch over the internet. To make the most of those services VoIP providers suggest that you have a broadband upload speed of at least 384kpbs, a 1GB processor and at least 256MB of RAM in your chosen computer in order to make effective video and voice calls over the internet.

Of course, for video calls you will also need to connect a fully functional webcam and for high-quality video conversations you will need a dual-core processor, quality video software and a hi-spec webcam. Although many tens of millions of us all over the globe are now regularly using such systems, few are aware of the option to be able to also convert their computer into a fully functional phone.

Indeed, not only fully operational as a telephone, but with the option to place international calls at extremely discounted rates when compared to landline providers. And, not only can subscribers call out to phones but they can also receive calls from telephones at their computer via a purchased telephone number, or an ‘online number’.

However, those in the know are already using the VoIP systems to their advantage, paying a relatively small subscription per month to make unlimited calls to landlines, and in some cases to mobiles, in other countries. But, many of the cheap call services are available without subscription on a pay-per-call basis.

For example, it is possible to place cheap calls to Germany, Spain, France or most other European countries from making a few clicks with the mouse on your computer or laptop – providing that it is connected to a moderately fast broadband connection. Dependent upon which country is being called, caller identification can also be used so that whomever you are calling knows it’s you ringing.

When compared with landline rates for calling Europe, especially at peak hours the option to use internet telephone services can offer huge savings. No extra equipment is required as calls can be made using the speaker and microphone set-up on the computer. However, a DECT handset can be purchased to enable you to make and receive calls around the house and not just in front of the computer, if you prefer.

Either way, the there are many options available to help you save money when it comes to making calls to your loved ones living outside of the UK.
