Record breaking snowfall in Switzerland lures skiers

Indeed, Switzerland is one of Europe’s most breathtaking countries for skiing – with crisp, crunchy snow underfoot and pure air up in the colossal, towering mountains. And, once it is time to relax and soothe those aching muscles, it is easy to take time out in one of the many charming chalets and luxurious hotels that are available.

It is important to understand that early snow has already fallen in the Swiss Alps, meaning winter in 2008 will be the perfect time for a ski holiday in Switzerland. With over a metre of snow falling in one night, and the snow level reaching 500 metres, this was the greatest amount ever recorded in the month of October since records began in 1931.

With a destination to suit all skiing abilities – from wobbly starters who spend most of the time on their rear, to professional skiers who slice down cross-country runs – Switzerland is an excellent ski holiday destination. And it is also good to know that it is easy to reach from the UK, with regular flights from regional airports; so you could be skiing, snowboarding or unwinding in your luxury hotel or chalet in just a few hours.

But which of Switzerland’s ski resorts suits you? The Bernese Oberland is the most famous alpine region, and is home to Interlaken, plus the charming chocolate-box resorts of Wengen and Murren, where downhill skiing was invented. But of course, the most scenic ski paradise is the Alps, home to the Jungfrau, M?nch and Eiger mountains.

In central Switzerland and Lake Lucerne, discover Engelberg-Titlis’ mountain peaks soaring into the clouds, and take advantage of the resort’s winter sports. As such, you can watch skiers fly through the air during Welcup Skispringen, and also learn to ski at the school. And if you wish to experience something a little bit different, take a horse and carriage ride through the sparkling white landscapes, and try your hand at Swiss snow walking to really work you leg muscles.

Furthermore, Graubunden is also a popular area for ski holidays, with the resorts of Davos, Arosa and Klosters. Klosters and St Moritz are well-known for being the favoured holiday locations of royals, and St Moritz is also renowned for its luxurious hotels and shopping.

And, if you are specifically interested in snowboarding, the sun-drenched Lake Geneva area is the perfect choice, with four snowparks and three quarterpipes. With great rail links from Geneva, a weekend break skiing or snowboarding is easy to plan.

As it goes, Valais is one of the highest ski areas in the Alps and features the incredible resort of Zermatt lying at the base of the Matterhorn, plus the quaint village of Saas Fee. Both picturesque villages are traffic free with wooden holiday chalets lining the streets, plus plenty of bars and restaurants – perfect for some lively apr?s-ski action.

So, now you’re in the mood for some ski action, what about equipment? It is good to know that some companies offer a door-to-door delivery service for your skis and board. Therefore you don’t have to battle with checking in heavy items at the airport; allowing you to start your ski holidays off on the right foot. And with the recent record-breaking snowfalls in Switzerland, what are you waiting for?
