Remember What Real Driving Feels Like?

Driving can be a monotonous and boring experience. Stuck in traffic on the way to work, taking the same route every day and never getting out of second gear is not what driving should be all about. While this type of driving is a necessity, there are so many other great roads out there in Britain that are quiet, serene and run through breathtaking scenery. So why not take some time out and do some real driving for a change?

In Scotland, there is an abundance of areas of natural beauty you can drive to and admire. Taking your car by ferry over to the Isle of Arran is one of the most spectacular. The ferry crossing itself takes less than an hour from Ardrossan in south west Scotland and, when you drive off the ferry upon arriving at the island, you’ll find an oasis of calm just waiting to be explored. The island itself is only 56 miles in circumference but driving around it, you’ll be struck by the sheer beauty of the scenery, architecture, wildlife, and much more. The winding roads with their undulations and surprises around every corner are an absolute joy to drive on, and you’ll probably want to do it at least twice to make sure you take everything in.

The A470 runs the length of Wales, and offers so much it’s impossible to describe all of its charms. Some of the highlights are winding your way through the majestic beauty of Snowdonia and marvelling at the unspoilt and remote Cambrian Mountains. The road takes you on a fantastic journey to the summit of the Oerddrws Pass, where the views will leave you inspired and astonished. The climb to the summit is truly amazing but the descent manages to eclipse it, as you meander down the narrow roads to the Dovey Valley far below. This drive is ideal for lovers of history and old buildings, with so many castles, abbeys and cathedrals to enjoy along the way. The A470 runs right through the heart of Wales and deserves to be made into a trip of its own in order to fully appreciate what’s on offer.

The North Cornish Coast is undoubtedly one of the most stunning parts of England and driving through it is one of life’s pleasures that everyone should enjoy at least once. Starting at the unspoilt village of Crantock and taking the coast road around Newquay, you’ll be able to take in fantastic views of the famous surf beaches below. Around five miles further on you’ll arrive at the wonderful Bedruthan Steps, where huge cliffs tower over the sea and rocks below. If you’re feeling fit and want to stretch your legs, the walk along the beach is great and climbing the steps back up afterwards will certainly work your muscles after all that driving. Just make sure you leave your handbrake on as you don’t want a car insurance claim to spoil your day out!
