Sailing fans gear up for 25th Kings Cup

Majorca has long been regarded as one of the leading sailing centres and water sport locations in the world, with several high profile sailing competitions visiting the waters of the Balearics annually. None are as high profile as the Kings Cup (known as the Copa Del Rey to the locals), however, held every August with last year’s event featuring 140 entries, all eager to take to the waves.

With a history that goes back twenty three years, the Copa Del Rey has become the largest and most important cruiser regatta in the Mediterranean and a first class event in the world sailing calendar. Over the years, the regatta has become the showcase event for the most elite teams in the sailing world, joining The Phuket Kings Cup Regatta, held annually since 1987 in Asia, and the Americas Cup as the premier sailing contests in the world.

Currently preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary, The Kings Cup has previously seen more than thirty teams compete in the competition, with spectators flocking to Palma de Mallorca to witness the breathtaking racing action as well as take in the scenery, culture and tropical warmth of the location. Sailing enthusiasts not only have the racing to enjoy during the Copa Del Rey but also a host of other attractions as well. To coincide with the race, boat manufacturers and owners from around the world convene in Palma de Mallorca for the yearly boat show, to give the public the chance to witness technological advancements in the world of boating as well as receive tips on boat maintenance from the experts.

During 7 days, the competition sees up to two races per day, including two off-shore races held on two consecutive days. Prizes are awarded in each class by the King of Spain, his royal highness Juan Carlos de Borbon, who, in celebration of the Kings Cup regatta reaching its 25th anniversary, will take to the water with his son Prince Felipe this year to compete in the race alongside the best in the boating world.

With cheap flights to Majorca and other Mediterranean locations readily available, many people are sure to be travelling this August for their holidays in the sun with Palma De Mallorca being a destination high on many people’s lists as tourists and boat lovers unite, excited to be witnessing one of the finest sailing competitions in the world in one of the most beautiful locations in the world.
